Phonics

At St. Thomas More we follow Read Write Inc. Phonics Programme of study. RWI is a validated Phonics scheme created by Ruth Miskin in 2002. It is the UK's leading synthetic phonics programme. 

The programme is produced by Oxford University Press and all staff at St. Thomas More have access to training and videos to ensure their continued professional development. 

Their mission, which we share is to train all teachers to teach children to read. 

At the core of this is inspiring headteachers and teachers to:

1. Put the teaching of reading at the heart of their schools and ensure teachers have the knowledge and determination to teach every child, regardless of age, background or need
2. Choose the best books to read aloud so children might read them for themselves
3. Place literature as the central pillar in establishing all children’s identity.
