Purpose of study
Design technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Pupils use creativity and imagination to design, make and evaluate products. Pupils learn how to use equipment safely, becoming resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Through the evaluation of past and present design technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Design Technology is linked with the topic that the children are learning and is an integral part of all subject areas.
The aims of teaching Design and Technology at St Thomas More Catholic First School is that all children will:
¨ Find enjoyment in creative art and technology.
¨ Develop skills to use a wide range of materials and techniques competently.
¨ Design products following different briefs and criteria.
¨ Feel able to express their ideas and feelings through imaginative creation in both two and three dimensions.
¨ Learn to study the world around them analytically.
¨ Develop an appropriate vocabulary to help them understand and discuss their own work and that of others.
¨ Experience and use a range of media and equipment.
¨ Appreciate and evaluate a range of work from their own and other cultures.
¨ Critically evaluate their own work.
