In St Thomas Class this week

Published by SMillward on

We have had a great week in St Thomas class this week and the children have been an absolute pleasure to teach for both of us! Thank you children!

In English, we have been reading our Read Write Inc books and practising different phonics sounds, spelling and writing sentences. We are hoping to send books home next week, so please send in book bags and your child’s reading diary.

In Maths, everyday we are practising writing our numbers and aim to write to 100. We have been counting forwards and backwards from different numbers between 1 and 100. We have found counting backwards tricky so we will be revisiting this again next week. We have been representing numbers 1-20 with different representations and are learning how to partition two-digit numbers. We are now more confident with counting in 10s and next week we will be learning to count in 2s.

In RE, the children in Year 1 have been looking at different celebrations and have focused on the sacrament of Baptism. They learnt all about the different artefacts and their meanings. The children in Year 2 have retold the story ‘David and Goliath’ and discussed what the story tells us about David.

In History, we continued our Great Fire of London topic and created a class fact file about Samuel Pepys. In Art we are creating Fire of London scenes; the children mixed colours to create flames and then have cut silhouettes of houses (photos to follow once they are all finished).

In Computing, we had the iPads out today and have been using the app ‘BeeBot’. We have been give the Bee Bot instructions to move across the screen. It was quite a challenge to put all the instructions in! The children also know that the instruction is called an algorithm.

Our Science lesson this week saw us planning an experiment. We talked about what material would be best for keeping us dry and how we could test this fairly. We had to decide which factors we would keep the same and which ones we would need to change. Next week we will be conducting the actual experiment. Keep an eye out for photos on here!

In PE we continued to practice our ball skills, we are now becoming much more controlled with our techniques and are beginning to apply them in small group games. Unfortunately it was too wet to go outside this week so we had our lesson in the hall.

Bug club books have now been updated online and the books which have been allocated to your child are the ones most closely matched to your child’s current reading ability and to the RWI books they are reading in class. We will be checking each week to see who has read and who needs new books adding. Personal passwords have been sent home but if you misplace this then please do not hesitate to let us know and we will happily give it to you again. The more your child reads each week the better!

Also a big week done to Oscar and Olivia G. who have both been awarded certificates for displaying acts of kindness towards others. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for a lovely week St Thomas Class.
